ABOUT/
A. ASE is a contemporary abstract artist exploring structure, texture, memory and transformation across painting, mixed media and photographic studies. The name emerges from àṣẹ, a Yoruba concept associated with the power to bring something into being and give form to intention. The initial A. is both personal and deliberately incomplete, allowing the work rather than the identity of its maker to remain at the center.
A fascination with the existing built environment runs through the practice: weathered surfaces, architectural details, patterns of craft and construction, material histories, traces of what came before and the spaces in between. Through photographic studies, A. ASE observes how places hold evidence of making, use, culture and time. On canvas, these same preoccupations are transformed through surfaces that are built, scraped, obscured and revealed.
Preservation, reclamation and reuse inform both process and perspective. What came before is not simply erased. New layers respond to what remains, allowing fragments to surface, histories to shift and familiar materials and forms to assume new meaning.
Each work becomes an exploration of what is present, what remains and what might emerge.
To make is an act of àṣẹ: intention given form.
